The project is implemented within the “Erasmus+” programme, under Key Action 2: Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices – Adult Education

BRinging STEM into Active aging (BRAIN)

Implementation period

01.12.2020 - 30.11.2022

Project objective

The project responds to the need to raise interest and social engagement among older persons in the fields of science, mathematics, engineering and technology (STEM).

It addresses the need to develop innovative tools that support senior citizens’ activity, increase their knowledge and skills, and thereby improve their self‑esteem and quality of life.

The project aims will be achieved by:

  • equipping scientific staff with appropriate skills and methods to effectively transfer scientific knowledge to older adults,
  • activating seniors by encouraging them to pass on their acquired knowledge within their local communities, in order to prevent social exclusion and strengthen their self‑esteem,
  • developing new teaching methods for older adults that can also be applied on an international scale.

Target groups

  • Scientific staff aged 35+ with at least five years of experience in a STEM field,
  • Older persons aged 60+ who are retired,
  • Adult learners interested in using games in their work or in developing STEM‑related competences.

Project results

  • Development of the “Science for Active Aging” toolkit – a set of tools designed to enhance STEM skills (science, mathematics, engineering and technology) in an accessible way for adult learners.
  • Creation of the mobile‑based game “Science in your Life”, allowing users to test different scenarios of applying STEM in everyday life and addressed to a broad age range.
  • Preparation of teaching methods based on the developed game for scientific and research staff involved in the activation of seniors.
  • Organisation of “Science for All” workshops in each partner country, where older adults will have the opportunity to transfer the knowledge they have gained to others.
