A student of Computer Science at WSEI University was a juror during the finals of the World Robot Olympiad in Singapore

Jakub Kwiatkowski, a first-year student of Computer Science at our University, has been appointed as a judge at the World Robot Olympiad Finals Singapore 2025, one of the largest and most prestigious robotics finals in the world.

The World Robot Olympiad (WRO) is an international robotics competition organised in over 100 countries. Jakub, acting as junior chief judge of WRO Poland, represented our University and Poland from 24 to 30 November 2025 during the international competition in the RoboMission Senior category, where the best teams from around the world competed in dynamic two-minute competition runs.

He told us about his passion and his impressions of the competition in Singapore.

Where did your passion for robotics and LEGO come from?

Jakub Kwiatkowski: - It all started when I began attending robotics courses based on LEGO sets in my hometown. It was there, thanks to learning about many interesting solutions and systematic learning from lesson to lesson, that I was able to deepen my knowledge of robotics, while having a lot of fun assembling various robots and mechanisms. Later, I went to a technical college in Zamość, which has a robotics team. This allowed me to continue developing in the field I was passionate about and to compete with other teams from around the world, for example during robotics competitions in Turkey and the United States.

How did you become a judge in robotics competitions?

- I competed twice in the World Robot Olympiad in Poland, more specifically in Lublin. In 2021, my team and I managed to take second place in the national finals in the RoboMission Senior category, and in 2023 we took third place in the same category, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the European Finals in Denmark. In the following years, I judged the First LEGO League competition twice, as well as the Roztoczańska Robot League in 2024. In the same year, I received information from my former coach and course teacher, Mateusz Stefanik, that there was an opportunity to join the group of WRO judges in Poland. After exchanging a few emails with the competition organiser, Marcin Giza, I received an invitation to collaborate. After this competition, I also expressed my willingness to judge not only in Poland, but also in other countries. I discussed this with Jakub Szel, the chief judge in Poland, who agreed to such trips. Thanks to this, in 2024 I was able to judge the European Finals in Brescia (Italy) and the World Finals in Izmir (Turkey). Thanks to the experience I gained, in 2025 Jakub Szela assigned me the role of junior chief judge at the World Robot Olympiad competition in Poland. In the same year, I was also the only judge from Poland to travel to Ljubljana (Slovenia) to judge the European Final in the Future Innovators Senior category, in which teams design robots and their practical applications in the world. I was also one of two Polish judges delegated to the World Final in Singapore, where I judged the RoboMission Senior category.

What are your impressions of the World Robot Olympiad Finals Singapore 2025?

- The World Robot Olympiad has its headquarters in Singapore, so we expected one of the best events and we were definitely not disappointed. The competition arena was located in a beautiful place, and there were many stands from various exhibitors. Of course, the most impressive were the competitors themselves and their teams, who were well prepared for such a prestigious event. The level of competition was extremely high. The city itself is also stunning, especially in the evening. I hope that future editions of the competition will maintain the same high standard.

You recently began studying computer science at WSEI University. Why did you choose our university and what do you expect from these studies?

- I chose to study computer science at WSEI University  because it offers a practical approach to learning and a modern curriculum. I expect that these studies will give me a solid technical foundation and prepare me to start a career in the IT industry.
